Until now if you want to use Skype for calls or messaging you had to install a version of the Skype app but now Skype are changing with the release of Skype for the Web. The browser based version of Skype works directly from the browser (Chrome, Safari, Firebox and IE) and doesn’t require a Skype client. Skype for Web will work directly from and you will be able to install message and call from the browser.

Currently Skype for Web is available for a small number of users and they are gradually rolling it out to more users. Initially you will need a small plug in for it to work but in the future it should be plugin free.

I am looking forward to giving it a try.

Voice translators aren’t anything new but implementing them automatically over video chat is a neat and interesting way to use it.

It feels one step closer to that automatic translation thing they have in Star Trek.

It’s not perfect, but it gives a much better understanding of what the other person is saying if it’s a language you don’t speak.

We can expect of course that things will get lost in translation and could have varying consequences. If you can imagine that it’s bad enough sometimes to have either voice to text getting things wrong, or an online translator getting things wrong, let alone combining the two to get a whole massive heap of confusion. So there’s quite a challenge for Microsoft to tackle. For one thing, it does show what the original language is in text to so you could at least see if it’s trying to translate the wrong phrase.

For the most part, the demo works well. They don’t have to talk completely unnaturally, though it does help anyway to speak more slowly and clearly when speaking to people in different languages. It might even be a useful way of learning to speak a different language.

What’s impressive is how you can speak long strings of text and it will pick it up. When we have people-translators for patients, they speak a few words at a time (granted, having a translator for medical reasons is highly important to get things precise)

As well as producing a translated text version, it also speaks the translated text.

Sign up at Skype:

The Skype Translator Preview will support a few languages at first and will initially be on devices running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Technical Preview only.

Participation in the preview will be confirmed depending on: the date you registered; the devices you selected; the availability of selected languages; and registration code (if you have one).

If you’re selected, we’ll send you an email with everything you need to download and use the preview of Skype Translator. In the meantime, learn more about the science behind Skype Translator.

Microsoft Research shows the science behind this. It’s not difficult to see how this could be implemented (if not already) into Cortana.

Microsoft just released a new app for WP devices, called Movie Creator (beta). the app allows users to edit and create movies on the go from their phones. Move Creator allows you to add, remove and trim video clips, along with filters, captions and cinematic effects. The app can also add background music from the music app stored on your phone (as long as it’s not DRM protected), and  sync them to your movie.

Making movies has never been easier, right from your Windows 8.1 phone!

Movie Creator helps you quickly and easily combine videos, photos, music and even cinemagraphs into stylish movies for sharing anywhere.

It’s simple! In four quick steps you select your footage, select a theme (that’s a style for your movie), add music and titles and then you’re ready to watch your movie.

You can personalize your movie too! The tools included allow you to rearrange clips, apply filters to your clips, adjust trim & duration of clips, rotate/flip/mirror clips, pan & zoom clips, add text titles & credits and adjust volume. You can also change movie themes and music anytime and even get more themes from the in-app Theme Store.

Save your movie in the size you wish and you are ready to watch and share it.

Halo Master Collection

Halo: The Master Chief Collection game will require a 15GB day-one patch to play multi-player sessions. This day-one patch is now available for download. You can download and keep it ready so that you can play the game on the launch day. Frank O’Conner, Franchise Development Director for the Halo series apologised on NeoGAF for the patch.

“Do I understand the inconvenience and annoyance for some users? Of course. I’m not going to blow smoke or ignore it. For some folks it will be straight up annoying and I both apologize unreservedly for the irritance, and hope that the package and the way it works more than makes up for it.”

As for why the company couldn’t release the game on two discs, O’Connor said: “Anything is feasible, it simply wasn’t practical for this product, this year in this timeline. The Xbox One platform continues to improve and mature, arguably faster and more meaningfully than others and maybe next year two discs or some other method would have been the right approach, but this year it’s the option we have available that on balance, makes the most sense for this giant, ambitious project.”

The Halo: The Master Chief Collection  is a remastered compilation of its classic Halo games in a unified UI for Xbox One later this year. This will go on sale for $59.99 on Nov. 11. This collection will include Halo 1, Halo 2 in 1080p, Halo 3 and Halo 4, with 100 multiplayer maps running in high-definition 1080p video at 60 frames per second on dedicated servers. There are two bonus things that come with this package. You will get access to beta of Halo 5: Guardians which will be available to play in December and also access to Halo Nightfall Digital series access.

Earlier today, we posted up what is believed to be the first Lumia device with Microsoft’s branding on the back. And now it looks like we have another device showing up with the same branding in China that you can see in the image above.

While the picture is blurry, you can see in the bottom row a larger device than the one that showed up this morning. You can also see many other colors of what is expected to be a low-end Lumia with Microsoft branding that should be announced next week in the top row of this photo.

While we don’t know if Microsoft will announce more than one device next week, it is clear that the company is quickly transitioning over to their own brand and away from Nokia. The big question will be is if they are able to carry through this transition the reputation that Nokia has built for creating quality and long lasting products.

While it is the same team and the same types of products being built, it is not easy for a company to build a positive relationship with consumers and it can take many years. With that being said, Microsoft is taking ownership of the Lumia name which should help from a branding perspective.

Last night, stylinred tipped that the Nokia UK facebook sent a message to its users that it would be changing its name to Microsoft Lumia UK. We knew this was happening but now they were reaching out to their public followers.

A Page you like is changing its name. “Nokia UK” is changing to “Microsoft Lumia UK“.

Should you try and get on Nokia UK, the page redirects you to Microsoft Lumia UK, though the page is still labelled Nokia UK.
